3 Instagram Layout Tips for Awesome Photo Collages

Collages on Instagram are very popular. I see multiple collage posts from my friends throughout the day. It makes sense, right? You go to a party, meet some friends, you've taken about 100 selfies. Five of them are really good. Of course, you want to share them with your Instagram followers. But hey, you're not going to post 5 selfies in a row either. You are not that self-obsessed.

So, you get the first collage app you find on the app store, grab the top 5 snaps, organize them a bit better, and edit the layout. If you don't like the way the first app does it, you try another one, and that's about it.

You'll be glad to know there's a better way to do all of this now. And he is blessed by the overlords of Instagram. Layout is a free (currently iOS only) Instagram app for creating beautiful collages.

It sounds simple, but this app can do a lot. So let's break down the art of good insta collage.

1. Perfect 5 picture collage

The collage of 5 images is my favorite. 3 is too low, 4 is boring, 6 is a crowd. The collage of 5 images also lends itself to interesting combinations. You have plenty of room to play.

In Layout, you start by choosing images first, then layout. It's all done on one screen and as you select the images, they spread accordingly in the collage thumbnails above. Choose 5 images to start.

You will see previews of about a dozen layouts with 5 images. That's the great thing about layout. It gives you the preview right there. Try shooting down from the point of separation to see them better. In this case, you can choose the first or the second option.

Once you choose a layout, you are free to drag and move elements, restricted to the grid. You can replace images, drag an image to another box to disable them, and more.

Dragging inside the image area will allow you to pan the image. And pressing and holding any of the edges will bring up a resizing tool. This will allow you to freely resize images. Again, limited to the grid.

2. Explore cool mirror collages

The layout designers made a conscious decision not to include borders in any form in the application. And it paid off tremendously. I hate borders anyway. They take up space in the already small image where you are trying to cram a lot.

A side effect of not having borders is to create cool, trippy and dare I say – hip effects using the Mirror and Return tools.

To start, simply select 1 photo. Tap on the corresponding layout – depending on whether you want to create a horizontal or vertical flip effect. Next, tap one of the images and tap Mirror or Return . Return flip the image and Mirror flips the image to the side. Pan images to create cool effects.

You can make this even more interesting by removing symmetry from the equation. When talking about splitting the images 50% and flipping them, most of the images will look good.

If you want a challenge, adopt a layout that is not at all symmetrical. You might not get something great the first time, but the effort will pay off in the long run.

3. Quickly create simpler collages

The great thing about Layout is that it's simple yet comprehensive. If you spend a few minutes in the app, you'll be surprised what you can find.

But at the same time, you can just jump into the app, select your images, tap on the layout you like, then tap on the Instagram button to post it. Yes, it can also be that quick and easy.

What are you going to offer?

I think Layout is one of the best collage apps. Even though it's limited by Instagram's constraints (only square layouts for example), you can still create awesome visuals with it, faster and better than with any other app.
