Windows 11: Why Businesses Should Delay Upgrading Work PCs, Gartner Advises

Windows 11 launched a few weeks ago and has already reached hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of computers worldwide. While some users hesitate to leave reliable Windows 10 behind, despite its refreshed interface, faster app performance, and Android app support, the upgrade is gaining traction. However, for work computers, experts recommend holding off on the free upgrade, even with its enhanced security features.

Useless?

Gartner's Research VP Stephen Kleynhans, quoted by The Register, describes Windows 11 as a "long-awaited facelift." He praises elements like the revamped Microsoft Store, Android app compatibility, and the absence of Internet Explorer—features that could have simply updated Windows 10.

Buzz

Kleynhans views the Windows 11 release as a Microsoft marketing move to refresh the PC ecosystem, setting new standards without disrupting Windows 10 users. A key improvement for enterprises: major feature updates now occur annually, aligning with professional workflows, compared to Windows 10's biannual cadence.

Should Businesses Migrate?

Not yet, says Kleynhans. He advises establishing a migration timeline and conducting limited IT staff testing to evaluate the new UI/UX and user impacts.

What About Home Users?

For personal Windows 10 users, upgrading is a low-risk, free choice—Microsoft offers a 10-day rollback window. Appealing features include DirectX 12, DirectStorage, gesture and voice controls, plus native Android app support.
