Master Smooth, Blended Edges for Transparent Backgrounds with Wondershare PixCut

Removing backgrounds from images is time-intensive but delivers stunning results. As a designer handling about 60 cutouts weekly, I've battled harsh edges from traditional pen tool paths, which often revealed remnants when composited for print or web. I've refined a technique using Wondershare PixCut that produces soft, blended edges—patient work with professional payoff.

Step 1

Select your image and open it in PixCut to begin the background removal process.

Step 2

Convert the background to a layer named "image." Create two new layers beneath it: fill one black and one white. These help reveal the darkest and lightest areas along the edges.

Step 3

Grab the Lasso tool and outline the subject, staying 8px to 10px outside the true edge. Refine the selection and delete. You'll see black or white peeking through—choose your base layer by edge tones (I start with black, alternating to white).

Step 4

Select a soft-edged eraser (45 hardness, 10px size) and erase near the Lasso path, following the subject's contour. Use [ or ] to resize to 5px and refine until the background fades seamlessly.

Step 5

Finish with the Smudge tool at 3px size, gently blending edges against the black or white layer. Discard these layers, then save as TIFF with a transparent background for versatile use.

Now you have a pro-level cutout ready for any project.
