Found a lost iPhone? Kudos for wanting to do the right thing—not everyone would. Returning it to its owner can be tricky without contact details, but built-in features make it straightforward without needing the passcode or Touch ID.
Luckily, several methods on the device itself can help identify the owner. Here's how, based on proven Apple features I've used to reunite devices with owners countless times.

If the owner realizes their iPhone is missing, they might activate Lost Mode via iCloud. This displays a custom message on the lock screen, often with contact info.

Simply power on the device and check the lock screen. No message? Move to the next option.
Pro Tip: If you lose your iPhone, visit icloud.com, select Find My iPhone, and enable Lost Mode to display your message.
Every iPhone on iOS 8+ has the Health app with Medical ID—a feature for storing emergency details like conditions and contacts, accessible without unlocking.

Turn on the iPhone, swipe right on the lock screen to the passcode entry, then tap Emergency (bottom left). Look for Medical ID—if set up, tap it to view contacts. Call one to report the found device.
Each iPhone has a unique IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) that reveals the carrier and device info—even if powered off.
To find it: On iPhone 6s/6s Plus, eject the SIM tray (use a paperclip); it's printed there. On other models, check the back engraving.

Use a site like imei.info for carrier details, then contact a local store with the IMEI. Staff can trace the owner (you might need to drop it off).
If nothing works, take it to your local police station—they handle lost and found items securely. Skip Apple Stores for this.
