Boost Dinner Enjoyment: Research Shows Ditching Your Phone Leads to Better Times with Loved Ones

While smartphones promise constant connectivity, recent research confirms they disrupt meaningful interactions at the dinner table. A study on the impact of devices during face-to-face socializing revealed that diners using phones enjoyed meals with friends and family far less than those who kept devices out of sight.

In this experiment, over 300 participants dined at restaurants with loved ones. They were randomly assigned to either leave phones on the table or store them away. Post-meal surveys gauged enjoyment levels, with researchers ensuring participants remained unaware of the phone-use monitoring.

Phone presence led to heightened distraction, dropping enjoyment scores by about half a point on a seven-point scale. Surprisingly, diners also felt more bored, underscoring how devices undermine shared moments.

Results extended beyond restaurants. A follow-up with over 100 participants tracked daily via smartphone surveys five times a day for a week. Consistent patterns emerged: phone use during interactions correlated with lower reported enjoyment of in-person socializing.
