How to Track and Recover Your Lost Android Phone with Google's Find My Device

Losing your Android phone can feel devastating—whether you misplaced it under the bed, left it in a taxi, or dropped it somewhere. As Android experts with years of experience helping users recover devices, we recommend Google's Find My Device as your first line of defense.

Find My Device works if the feature is enabled, location services are active, your phone is powered on, and it's signed into your Google account.

This tool is built into the OS on Pixel phones and most Android devices, often enabled by default. Note that some manufacturers like Samsung offer their own apps, such as Find My Mobile.

To verify Find My Device is set up on your phone:

  • Open Settings > Security and search for "Find My Device".
  • If listed but off, tap and toggle it on.

If you prefer Google's app over your manufacturer's—or to use a tablet—download the Find My Device app from the Google Play Store.

Next, ensure location services are on:

  • Go to Settings > Location. Check if it's enabled under the header.
  • If off, tap to turn it on.
  • Review app permissions: Tap "App location permissions" to adjust access and recent usage.

Choose from these secure options based on the situation:

  • Play sound: Rings at full volume for 5 minutes, even if silenced—ideal for nearby searches.
  • Secure device: Locks it remotely and signs out of your Google account to protect data (great for public spots like taxis).
  • Erase device: Factory reset remotely if stolen and unrecoverable—data is gone, but so is access for thieves.
