Gmail 101: Extend Undo Send Time to Avoid Email Regrets

We've all hit 'Send' in Gmail and regretted it moments later—whether from a 'Reply All' blunder, wrong recipient, typo, or impulsive rant. That's where Undo Send shines, giving you precious seconds to pull it back and avert disaster. As someone who's relied on this feature in high-stakes communications, I can attest it's a game-changer.

(While Gmail leads here, other email apps offer similar safeguards.)

By default, Gmail provides a 5-second window, but you can extend it up to 30 seconds for more thoughtful pauses. I've set mine to 20 seconds; it's prevented awkward apologies more than once without slowing down routine sends.

Adjust it via Gmail's web version:

  • Click the gear icon (Settings) in the top right, then 'See all settings'.
  • On the 'General' tab, scroll to 'Undo Send'.
  • Select 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds.
  • Scroll down and hit 'Save Changes'.

Post-send, a 'Cancel' button appears bottom-left for your chosen duration—it works seamlessly on mobile too. Tap it to edit your draft and get it right.
