In February 2020, we detailed Google's innovative Call Screen feature for Pixel phones, which filters unknown or unwanted callers using the Google Phone app.
With Android 12, Google has enhanced this tool to combat spam calls and simplify navigating automated menus. Many features now extend beyond Pixel devices.
Here's how Call Screen works: For calls from unknown numbers, tap the "Screen Call" button alongside accept or decline options. The caller hears a prompt to state their name and reason for calling. Transcribed text appears on your screen, letting you decide whether to answer.
Note: Features vary by device. Automatic Call Screen is exclusive to Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, based on our testing across models including the Pixel 3 and Samsung devices via the Google Phone app from the Play Store.

Managing Call Screen settings is straightforward, with tailored steps for Pixel 6 series versus other devices.
Toggle "See caller ID and spam" to identify businesses, spam, and contacts. Enable "Verified calls" for legitimate company caller ID.

Tap "Call Screen" to customize handling for spam, possible spoofed numbers, first-time callers, or hidden numbers. Options include ringing for manual screening or automatic screening (Google rejects robocalls). Spam can be silently declined. Configure each category individually; default is manual after ringing. Note: Automatic screening disables with headphones or speakers.

Additional options: Record filtered calls and select voice (female default; change under "Voice" for male).
Manual screening remains available for unknown callers. Access settings:

Toggle "See caller ID and spam," "Filter spam calls" (silences suspicious rings), and "Verified calls."
Whether automatic or manual, Call Screen effectively shields you from spam and scams, drawing from our real-world use on multiple devices.
