File extensions help you quickly identify file types, which is especially useful in OneDrive with files from diverse apps and devices. However, they're hidden by default in the desktop and mobile apps, leaving generic icons that can mislead you.

Thankfully, displaying extensions is simple on desktop and Android, with a straightforward workaround on iOS. Follow these proven steps based on OneDrive's latest features.
OneDrive integrates seamlessly with Windows File Explorer, which offers a native way to reveal extensions. Note: This change applies to all folders, not just OneDrive.
Step 1: Open File Explorer, click File in the menu bar, and select Change folder and search options.

Step 2: Go to the View tab, uncheck Hide extensions for known file types under Advanced settings, then click Apply and OK.

Extensions now appear in your OneDrive folder across all views (list, details, icons, etc.).

Tip: To hide them later, recheck the option in Folder Options. Alternatively, right-click a file, select Properties, and check the File type field—or hover over it for a tooltip preview. These are handy for occasional checks but less efficient for multiple files.

The Android app includes a dedicated toggle for file extensions—user-friendly and quick to enable.
Step 1: Open OneDrive, tap the Me icon at the bottom, then Settings.

Step 2: Toggle on Show file extensions and return to your files.

Extensions appear instantly. If not, restart the app. To disable, toggle it off in Settings.

Quick alternative: Tap the three dots next to a file, select the info icon, and view the Type.

iOS lacks a global toggle, but checking extensions is effortless via the file menu.
Tap the ellipsis (…) next to a file—the extension shows with the filename at the top. Tap Details for more info like size and date.

In the Files app, long-press a OneDrive file and select Info.

OneDrive for web displays extensions by default—no extra steps needed. Now you can confidently manage files across all platforms without guesswork.
