Social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Instagram are essential for staying connected, sharing photos, stories, and updates. However, unwanted messages, spam, or harassment can disrupt your experience. Blocking is a straightforward way to regain control. In this expert guide, we'll cover exactly what happens when you block someone on WhatsApp or Instagram, plus clear steps to block and unblock users.
As the world's most popular free messaging app, WhatsApp makes it easy to handle annoyances like spam groups, fake news, or persistent unwanted contacts.
To block: Open the chat, tap the contact's name at the top, scroll down, and select Block. To unblock: Go to the chat, tap the name, and choose Unblock.

The contact remains in your phone and WhatsApp list. You can unblock anytime via the chat info screen—no data is lost.

Instagram excels at photo and video sharing, but trolls and unwanted followers are common. Blocking takes seconds.
To block: Visit their profile, tap the three dots (top right), and select Block. For a lighter option, choose Restrict. To unblock: Go to Settings > Privacy > Blocked Accounts, then tap Unblock next to their name.

Instagram doesn't notify them. Once blocked:
No notification is sent, but clues like missing last seen, DP, and status updates make it obvious.
No alert is given. Their search for your profile yields no results—they simply disappear from their view.
Restricting differs from blocking: They can still follow, view posts/stories, but can't like, comment, or DM without approval. Comments go to hidden requests.
