While iOS has historically offered less customization than Android, recent updates have transformed the lock screen into a highly versatile hub. Tested on an iPhone running iOS 15.3, these features remain relevant in later versions too. Here's how to personalize what you see and access without unlocking your device.
Your lock screen shows the time, date, and notifications by default—a familiar sight for iPhone users everywhere.
Additional features appear if enabled in Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode). Scroll to options like Control Center, Today View, and replying to messages. Most are on by default, except USB accessories.
With Face ID, swipe down from the top-right for Control Center (brightness, volume, Wi-Fi). Swipe down from the center for Siri suggestions. Swipe up for notifications, right-to-left for Camera, left-to-right for Today View. Each offers customization potential, especially widgets.
Today View lets you add widgets for at-a-glance info like weather, calendar, notes, or photos—no unlock required for most. Apps like Reddit deliver fun previews (think daily cat pics).
Access from Home Screen: swipe right, then customize:
Enable in Settings for lock screen access. Customize via Settings > Control Center: add toggles like Flashlight or connectivity.
Reorder: long-press the three bars next to a control and drag. They appear in rows below Focus, brightness, and volume.
Pro Tip: Long-press icons for extras—e.g., Camera offers Portrait or Video modes.
Manage per app in Settings > Notifications > Notification Style. Disable entirely, tweak alerts, or route to Notification Center.
Lock Screen previews: Always, When Unlocked, or Never for privacy.
Time-Sensitive: Ensures urgent alerts (e.g., delivery confirmations) bypass settings.
Scheduled Summary: Bundle non-urgent notifications. Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary.

Reduce clutter while staying informed.
Personalize with memories or graphics: Settings > Wallpaper > Choose a New Wallpaper.
Select Apple's options or your photos, adjust, and set for Lock Screen, Home Screen, or both. Make it uniquely yours.
