As a seasoned iOS customization expert, I've helped countless users transform their iPhones into unique reflections of their style. While swapping wallpapers is easy, creating custom app icons takes it further—using Apple's own Shortcuts app for a seamless, native experience.
This creates shortcuts that launch apps with your chosen icons, not replacements for originals. It's straightforward, though it requires a few steps per app. The payoff? A stunning, personalized home screen. Here's how, tested on the latest iOS versions.
Step 1: Open the Shortcuts App
- Locate Shortcuts—it's pre-installed. Swipe left to App Library, search "Shortcuts" if needed.

- Tap the "+" in the top right, then "Add Action".
- Search "Open App", select it.
- Tap "App" (says "Choose"), pick your target app.

Step 2: Add to Home Screen
- Tap the three dots (top right) for Details.
- Name your shortcut, tap "Add to Home Screen".
- Preview shows default icon—tap "Add" anyway.

Step 3: Upload Custom Icon
- Download icons from sites like Flaticon or design your own—save to Photos.
- Back in Details, tap "Add to Home Screen" again.
- Tap icon preview under "Home Screen Name and Icon".
- Select "Choose Photo", pick your image.
- Adjust crop in highlighted area, tap "Choose".

Step 4: Finalize and Hide Original
- Tap "Add"—your custom icon appears!
- If duplicates show, long-press unwanted, "Delete Bookmark".

- Hide original: Long-press it, "Edit Home Screen", tap "-".
- Select "Remove from Home Screen"—app stays in Library.
A quick note: Tapping your shortcut may briefly show a dropdown naming the original app. It vanishes in seconds—no big deal for most users.
