Master iPhone Screen Time: Track Usage and Set Healthy Limits Like a Pro

As tech experts who've guided thousands on digital wellness, we know excessive iPhone use can impact health. Apple's Screen Time, launched with iOS 12 and refined through iOS 13 and beyond, helps you monitor and curb it effectively. (No new features announced for iOS 15 yet, but we'll update.)

Start in Settings > Screen Time. Here's how to leverage its key tools for balanced habits.

Daily Average

View your daily summary at the top, including average usage. Tap See All Activity for app-by-app breakdowns and time spent.

Downtime

Downtime restricts distracting apps during set periods, promoting eye rest. Blocks aren't permanent—override when needed.

  • Tap Downtime and enable it.
  • Choose days and times (e.g., evenings). Only allowed apps and calls work—like keeping Messages but blocking social media during work.
  • Get warnings before start; extend by 1 minute, 15 minutes, or skip for the day.

Sync across iCloud devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac) via Share Across Devices.

For allowed apps: From main screen, tap Always Allowed.

  • Add from Choose Apps list.
  • Remove via minus icon.

Customize contacts: Tap Contacts > Specific Contacts under Allow Communication for family alerts during focus time.

App Limits

Cap daily time per app or category to avoid black holes like social media.

  • Tap App Limits > Add Limit.

Screen Time Passcode

Protect settings from kids or self-sabotage with a 4-digit code.

  • Tap Use Screen Time Passcode.
  • Set code and link Apple ID for recovery.
  • Change via Change Screen Time Passcode.

Content & Privacy Restrictions

Control explicit content, app age ratings, web access, and game features. Ideal for parents or personal filters; also manage privacy like ad tracking or mic access.
