How to Change Alexa's Voice on Echo Devices: Male, Female, or Celebrity Options

Alexa's familiar feminine voice has become a staple in millions of homes, but Amazon has now introduced a male voice option—along with celebrity voices from stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Shaquille O'Neal, and Melissa McCarthy. While Apple and Google beat them to it years ago, this update brings welcome variety to Echo users.

The celebrity voices, priced at $5 each, handle specific interactions like alarms, timers, jokes, and weather. Unsupported requests default to the standard Alexa voice. As smart home experts who've tested these features across multiple devices, we recommend the Alexa app for reliable changes.

Voice settings apply only to the specific Echo device you're adjusting. For multi-device homes, repeat the process per unit. Note: The Alexa mobile app retains the original female voice.

Future updates may allow global changes—stay tuned. Here's our proven step-by-step guide:

Change Voice on Echo or Echo Show Devices:

  • Say "Alexa, change your voice".
  • For multiple Echos, specify the device when prompted.
  • Name the target device.
  • Alexa confirms with the new voice if successful.
  • If unsupported, she'll say "Sorry, [device] doesn't support this."

Via the Alexa App (iOS/Android):

  • Tap Devices at the bottom.
  • Select Echo & Alexa (top left).
  • Choose your device.
  • Tap the gear icon (top right).
  • Scroll to Alexa’s Voice and select it.
  • Pick Original (female) or New (male).

Enable Celebrity Voices:

  • Say "Alexa, introduce me to [celebrity name]."
  • Follow prompts to purchase ($5) and activate.
  • Use "Hey [celeb name]" to invoke; "Alexa" reverts to standard.
