I've owned Amazon Echo devices for years, and they never cease to amaze with their versatility. While privacy-conscious users may hesitate about always-on listening, for most, the convenience—from smart home control to hands-free communication—far outweighs concerns.
One standout feature I've relied on is using Echo speakers as an intercom system. Communicate effortlessly between rooms, or even from your phone inside or outside the home, directly to any Alexa-enabled device. Here's how to set it up.
Start with the Alexa app on your Android or iOS device—essential for this feature. If your Echo is linked to another household member's Amazon account, ask them to add you via the app: Tap the menu icon (top left) > Settings > Alexa Account > Amazon Household. Follow prompts to join.

Select the device, tap Communicate, enable the Communicate slider, and set Drop In to "On".

Repeat for every device you want to connect. Also, ensure Do Not Disturb is off on each.
Now, say to any Echo, "Alexa, drop in on [device name]." A green light ring appears briefly, then it connects automatically—no acceptance needed. Perfect for quick calls across the house. End with "Alexa, stop."
If it fails, check the device name. In the Alexa app, go to Devices (bottom right) > All Devices, select the device, tap the name under Edit Name. Use simple room-based names like "Living Room" for ease.

Access from your phone anytime: With Drop In enabled and household access, open the app, tap the blue speech bubble (bottom center), and say "Drop in on [device name]." Works inside or out.
This intercom feature is a game-changer in Echo's robust toolkit. Say goodbye to shouting across the house—a quieter home is a happier one.
