One of the standout features in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey is Focus mode—a game-changer for managing distractions.
Building on Do Not Disturb, Focus offers advanced customization, letting you fine-tune notification filters with precision. Access it easily from Control Center across Apple devices.
- To get started, go to Settings > Focus and tap the + button to create a new mode. Edit or view existing ones here too.
- Apple provides handy presets like Personal, Work, Fitness, Games, and Reading. Specialized ones—Driving, Fitness, Gaming—include smart triggers: Fitness activates during Apple Watch workouts, while Gaming kicks in with a Bluetooth controller. Custom modes offer flexibility without these automations.
- For a custom Focus, choose a name, icon, and color to match your needs.

- Select allowed contacts who can message you during Focus, just like Do Not Disturb.
- Choose apps permitted to send notifications—ideal for a Work Focus with only Slack and key messaging apps.
- Opt in for Time Sensitive Notifications, a priority category for urgent alerts.

After setup, dive deeper in the Focus settings menu (return anytime via Settings > Focus).
- Focus Status: Let contacts know you're in Focus (supported in Messages).
- Home Screen: Hide pages or duplicate app icons for context-specific layouts, enhanced by App Library.
- Lock Screen: Silence notifications, dim the screen, or customize display options.
