How to Set Up Private Listening on Roku: Step-by-Step Guide

Wireless headphones are ideal for enjoying late-night TV without waking your spouse or kids. Roku's built-in private listening feature, available on all devices, streams audio from your favorite shows and movies directly to your headphones—no expensive new gear required. As someone who's tested Roku setups extensively, I can confirm it's a game-changer for peaceful viewing.

Configuring Private Listening

To get started, note the two methods Roku offers: via a Private Listening-enabled remote or the official Roku app on iOS/Android. Only Roku Ultra and select Roku-integrated smart TVs support remote-based listening.

For a compatible remote, simply plug wired headphones into its side jack. (Bluetooth requires the app method below.)

The app route—my preferred, versatile option—works on any Roku. Download the free Roku app from your app store.

Tap the Remote tab at the bottom to access remote controls.

Enable Private Listening

Pair or plug in your headphones first (Bluetooth or wired). Tip: Older Bluetooth headsets may have ~0.5-second audio lag—test yours for sync.

Tap the headphone icon to activate. Best perk? Up to four devices can connect simultaneously, perfect for group movie nights while keeping sleeping kids undisturbed.
