Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is an essential tool for PDF viewing and annotation, yet some features require a deeper dive to unlock their full potential. Building on our previous guides to streamlining the Tools pane and tabbed views, this expert tutorial demystifies changing highlight colors – a frequent pain point for professionals handling document reviews.
With years of hands-on experience optimizing PDF workflows, I've tested these methods across versions to ensure reliability. Here's how to take control:

While the highlight tool defaults to yellow, Adobe provides several hidden options to switch colors seamlessly. Let's explore the most effective approaches.
To adjust colors on existing highlights, right-click the highlighted text and select Properties. This opens the Highlight Properties dialog.
Pro Tip: For multiple highlights, hold Ctrl and left-click to select them.
In the Appearance tab, use the color picker to choose a new shade and adjust opacity with the slider.

Check Make Properties Default to apply this as your new standard.

Click OK – changes apply instantly, streamlining future annotations.
For real-time customization, press Ctrl + E after selecting the highlighter (toggle if the toolbar doesn't appear).

This persistent, movable toolbar offers a color palette, opacity presets (five levels), and quick tool access – ideal for dense documents.

Selections persist across sessions, making it my go-to for efficient workflows.

Activate Comment mode via View > Tools > Comment > Open for an integrated color picker, though it adds interface elements (hide the sidebar as needed).

Pick a color, pin the tool, and tweak opacity – defaults update automatically.
Note: Close via the toolbar's button.iOS lacks a direct picker unlike Android, but tap a highlight, select Color, and choose from options. Adjust opacity similarly – it sets as default.

Acrobat Reader DC excels at PDF tasks, but intuitive UI tweaks could elevate it further. The floating toolbar remains the fastest for pros.
