Instagram Stories launched in 2016 to rival Snapchat and have since evolved with powerful features for eye-catching content. Among countless stories, the ones with vibrant colors, stickers, and effects truly shine. Many creators leverage Instagram's built-in tools for this, but one standout technique—a solid color block background—is often overlooked.
As seasoned social media experts with years of hands-on experience optimizing Instagram content, we've mastered these tricks to help your stories pop. Here's how, step by step.
You can apply a background color in Type mode or standard mode. Follow these proven steps:
Step 1: Open the Instagram app on your phone.
Step 2: Tap the Story icon (upper left) to enter Story mode. Capture a new photo or upload from your gallery.

Step 3: Tap the pen tool (top right). Select a color from the bottom palette.

Step 4: Press and hold anywhere on the image until the color fills the screen. You've got your solid background!

Step 5: Tap Done, then add text, stickers, or elements with the Text tool.

Want to tease an image underneath? Try a transparent effect next.
For a glossy, semi-transparent overlay on photos:
Step 1: Enter Story mode and capture/upload a photo.
Step 2: Select the pen tool and switch to the second pen option.

Step 3: Pick a color from the bottom panel. Press and hold on the image to apply a translucent layer across the screen.

Step 4: Tap Done and customize further.

Reverse the color block: Cover with color/transparency, then erase to reveal parts of the photo—perfect for teasers.
Step 1: Apply a color block or translucent layer as above.

Step 2: Tap the eraser icon. Swipe to erase and expose the underlying image.

Step 3: Tap Done.
Instagram's five fonts—Typewriter, Strong, Classic, Modern, Neon—offer varying background options (Modern and Neon excluded).
Step 1: In a story, tap the Text icon.

Step 2: Enter text, tap the font name, select Typewriter.

Step 3: Change text color via bottom palette. For background, tap the sparkling A icon (top left) and pick a color.

Step 4: Tap Done.
Step 1: Add text, select Strong style.
Step 2: Tap sparkling A icon (upper left), choose background color.

Select Classic font, tap sparkling A for color. Tap again for translucent mode—experiment for the perfect look.

Boost engagement with question stickers—change their background easily.
Step 1: In Story mode, tap sticker icon, select Questions.

Step 2: Tap the sticker; select background color from bottom palette.

For more flexibility than the sticker, use text:
Step 1: Tap Text icon.

Step 2: Type #yourhashtag. Customize color and style freely.
