As a long-time Windows user, I dual-booted Windows 10 Technical Preview with Windows 7 and immediately noticed its minimalist design felt too stark—especially the plain white title bars. Many early adopters shared this sentiment. The good news? You can easily restore customizable title bar colors using a native tweak, no extra software required.
I'll guide you through the process step by step. This method draws from proven Windows theming techniques I've used successfully.
Note: You'll need administrator privileges on Windows 10 to apply these changes.
Step 1: Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes. For speed, use the Run dialog (Win + R) and paste the path. Here's what an unmodified folder looks like:

Copy the Aero folder within the same directory, confirming with administrative privileges when prompted. If you see a Folder access was not accepted dialog, select Do this for all current items and click Ignore.

Once copied, you'll have a new folder named aero – Copy. No need to rename it yet.
Step 2: Rename aero – Copy to windows and open it. Inside, find aerolite.msstyle and aero.msstyle. Rename aero.msstyle to windows.msstyle. If file extensions aren't visible, go to the View tab and check File name extensions.

Next, open the en-US subfolder and rename aero.msstyle.mui to windows.msstyle.mui.
Step 3: Return to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes and rename aero.theme to windows.theme. Right-click it, select Open with > Notepad—avoid choosing Always use this app.

In Notepad, locate the VisualStyles section. Replace Path=%ResourceDir%\Themes\Aero\Aero.msstyles with Path=%ResourceDir%\Themes\windows\windows.msstyles, then save.

Step 4: Double-click windows.theme. You'll instantly see a blue title bar in File Explorer—it applies to all app windows.

Step 5: To pick your color, right-click the desktop, select Personalize > Colors, and choose an accent color. Note: This updates the Start menu and other elements too.

Download my pre-edited zip file, extract it to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes, apply windows.theme, and adjust colors as needed.
That's it—custom title bars that match your wallpaper. To revert, apply the original aero.theme and delete the windows folder and windows.theme file.
