Struggling with an image that's too small on your GIMP canvas? Or need to enlarge your view for precise photo edits? GIMP's zoom tools let you magnify or shrink your canvas view effortlessly. Note: These adjust your display zoom, not the image's actual size—to resize the image itself, use Image > Scale Image.
The Zoom tool, presets, and menu options provide flexible control. As a GIMP expert with years of image editing experience, I've relied on these for professional workflows.
Use these proven methods to zoom your images effectively:
Click the Zoom tool in the Toolbox or the Zoom icon in the canvas ruler's corner. The Tool Options below the toolbox show Auto Resize Window and a Zoom In/Out toggle.

Go to View > Zoom and select a preset zoom level. Alternatively, click the Zoom Preset button at the bottom center of the GIMP interface.

From the menu bar, select View > Zoom > Zoom In or Zoom Out.

Select View > Zoom > Fit Image in Window to perfectly size your image to the canvas window.

Choose View > Zoom > Fill Window to enlarge the image up to 335%, filling the canvas.

Go to View > Zoom > Zoom to Selection to adjust the view so your selection fills the window.

Select View > Zoom > Revert Zoom to restore the previous zoom level.

Click View > Zoom > Other.

The Zoom ratio dialog opens. Enter a custom value and click OK.
Hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel to zoom in (up) or out (down) fluidly.
Press Shift + Ctrl + J to zoom the image up to 168% while keeping it in view. The Zoom tool shortcut is Z.
