Apple has released public betas for iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8, tvOS 15, and macOS Monterey. We've detailed how to access the iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 betas in our dedicated guides. If you're ready to test the latest Apple Watch software, follow our proven steps below.
watchOS 8 is slated for a stable release this fall, introducing exciting features like expanded workout types in the Fitness app, a new Mindfulness app, a Portrait mode-compatible watch face for iPhone photos, enhanced weather and smart home integrations, and more. It's compatible with Apple Watch Series 3, Series 4, Series 5, Series 6, and SE models.
Before proceeding, consider these key caveats from our hands-on testing:
- Beta software can be unstable, leading to bugs with third-party apps, sluggish performance, and reduced battery life—challenges even on stable watchOS. We recommend using a secondary watch if possible.
- Unlike iOS or iPadOS betas, you cannot downgrade from watchOS 8 beta to watchOS 7. If issues arise, you'll wait for the fall stable release. This alone may convince most users to hold off, especially if your Apple Watch is essential.
Still interested? Here's our reliable process to install the watchOS 8 public beta:
- First, install the iOS 15 beta on your iPhone using our guide, then return here.
- Open Safari on your iPhone and visit Apple's Beta Software Program page.
- Sign in with your Apple ID.
- Scroll to the "Get Started" link and tap it.
- Select the watchOS 8 tab at the top.
- Under the Start section, choose "Enroll your Apple Watch."
- Scroll down, tap "Download Profile," and allow in the pop-up.
- The Watch app on your iPhone will open automatically to install the beta profile.
- Restart your Apple Watch when prompted.
- In the Watch app, go to General > Software Update.
- Tap Install next to the watchOS 8 beta.
- The update downloads to your iPhone then transfers to the watch. Ensure the watch is charging (50%+), on Wi-Fi, near your iPhone, or installation pauses.
After installation, your Apple Watch restarts and is ready. From our experience, some complications and third-party apps may require manual opening or a second restart to function properly.
