Since watchOS 8, Apple's AssistiveTouch has revolutionized accessibility on the Apple Watch, letting you navigate entirely with arm movements and hand gestures—no screen taps required. As someone who's tested this extensively on Series 7 and SE models, I can attest to its reliability for everyday use.
The tech is impressive: on-device machine learning analyzes signals from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart rate sensor to detect finger pinches and fist clenches. Tilt your arm for a precise motion pointer, mimicking a cursor.
Originally designed for users with limited mobility, it's equally practical for messy cooking sessions, gloved winter outings, or any hands-busy scenario. Answer calls, launch workouts, use Apple Pay, summon Siri, and more—all gesture-powered.

AssistiveTouch requires Apple Watch SE, Series 6, or Series 7 (and later). Setup is straightforward on iPhone or the watch—iPhone is easier for navigation.
On iPhone (Watch app):
On Apple Watch:
Follow the on-watch prompts to calibrate pinch and clench gestures. Skip if rushed, but practice via Learn More for best results.
Activate with a double-pinch (default). Gestures: single pinch to advance, double-pinch to retreat, single clench to tap/select, double-clench for Action menu (Digital Crown, Scrolling, Apple Pay, Siri). A highlight outlines the focused item.
For motion pointer: Double-pinch > Action menu > pinch to Interaction > clench > navigate to Motion Pointer > clench. Tilt your arm to move the cursor; hover to select, or clench to click.
There's a learning curve—I've fumbled gestures during routines and refined my motion pointer control through practice. Customize via Watch app or device: reassign actions (e.g., double-pinch for instant motion pointer), tweak sensitivity, pointer speed, tolerance, and edge behavior.
To edit: Hand Gestures menu > select gesture > choose action. Reset via Reset Defaults anytime.
