As mobile devices handle most of our daily communications, preserving SMS history is crucial. But what if your phone is lost, stolen, or damaged? Fortunately, Android's built-in Google Drive backups and trusted third-party tools make recovery straightforward.

Popular apps like WhatsApp offer easy cloud backups for chats, and the same applies to standard SMS texts. For Android users, Google Drive is a go-to solution. In this guide, based on extensive testing and real-world recovery experience, I'll walk you through backing up and restoring messages reliably.
First, here's how to enable automatic SMS backups via your device's settings.
Android automatically includes SMS in full device backups to your linked Google account—no isolated SMS option exists yet. Follow these steps for seamless protection:
Step 1: Tap the gear icon on your home screen or app drawer to open Settings.

Step 2: Select Google.

This opens your Google Account dashboard.
Step 3: Tap Backup.

Step 4: Ensure Backup to Google Drive is toggled on.

Step 5: Verify a Google Drive account is selected for storage.

Step 6: Tap your device name and confirm SMS text messages is listed in the backup data.

Step 7: Tap Backup now to save your messages immediately.

Step 1: Open the Google Drive app (download from Play Store if needed).

Step 2: Tap the menu icon (three lines).

Step 3: Select Backups.

Tap your backup to view details. Note: Direct SMS restoration isn't supported natively—see recovery options below.

Android doesn't allow selective restores from Drive backups. A factory reset during setup is required to recover SMS alongside other data. This erases apps and settings, so back up essentials first. Only recommended if you're prepared for a full wipe.
After testing several Play Store options with strong reviews, SMS Backup & Restore by SyncTech Pty Ltd stands out for reliability and ease. It selectively backs up/restores SMS from Google Drive without a reset.
Grant permissions post-install, then follow these steps.
Step 1: Tap Set up a backup on the home screen.

Step 2: Disable Phone calls for SMS-only; tap Next.

Step 3: Enable Google Drive; tap Next.

Step 4: Tap Connect to link Drive.

Choose limited access: Files/folders opened or created by the app.

Step 5: Select your Drive account; tap OK.

Step 6: Tap Allow.

Step 7: Tap Save.

Step 8: Set preferences (Wi-Fi only, charging); tap Next.

Backup completes with confirmation. Schedule recurring backups (daily/weekly) from the home screen for ongoing protection.

Step 1: Tap the menu icon.

Step 2: Select Restore.

Step 3: Choose backup; tap Restore.

Step 4: OK to set as default SMS app temporarily.

Step 5: Tap Yes.

Restoration starts; tap Close when done.

Step 6: OK to revert default to Messages app.

Step 7: Open Messages; set as default.

Step 8: Confirm Yes.

Messages arrive as new; access in the app. Expect 15-60 minutes based on volume.

Note: Requires prior app backup to Drive. No RCS support—schedule automations for peace of mind.
