Samsung's Always On Display (AOD) is a standout feature on premium AMOLED devices like the Galaxy S9 and S9+. It keeps essential info like notifications, battery level, and time visible without waking your phone fully. With a recent update, you can now personalize it further by adding animated GIFs.
AOD customization lets you tailor clock widgets to your style. The new GIF support makes your S9/S9+ even more unique. While Samsung provides AMOLED-optimized GIFs, you can also use your own—provided they're lightweight.

Note: Requires Always On Display version 3.2.26.4 or later.
Open Settings > Lock screen and security > Clock & Face Widgets. Or go directly to Always On Display settings via the AOD page.
Scroll to the photo add option (fourth from bottom), select it, and tap Add GIF at the screen bottom.
Browse Samsung's preloaded GIFs, including fun animal options. Select one, tap Apply, then lock your screen to see it activate.
GIFs play once on activation and stay static unless double-tapped to replay—no continuous looping to save power.
In Clock Widgets, select Add Photos. Tap the More icon (instead of Add GIF) to pick from your gallery. Opt for short, low-res files for best results.
Pro tip: Create custom GIFs via AR Emoji for a personal touch on your AOD.
