Expert Guide: Strengthen Your Facebook Privacy and Account Security

As a social media powerhouse, Facebook continually refines its privacy settings interface to empower users with clearer visibility into their data sharing and usage. Drawing from years of guiding users through platform security, here are key settings to prioritize, step-by-step navigation tips, and proven strategies to safeguard your personal information effectively.

Many users start with the main Privacy tab in Settings, which controls visible shares like location, photos, and post visibility. However, a critical area often overlooked is the permissions granted to connected apps, games, and websites tied to your Facebook account.

Apps, Games, and Websites
Over time, you've likely authorized numerous third-party apps, sites, and games to access your data. Logging in via Facebook shares your activity and details—audit these connections regularly.

On desktop or laptop, click the downward arrow in the top-right corner (next to the question mark icon). Select "Settings & Privacy" > "Settings." In the left sidebar, choose "Apps and Websites." Active connections will list here. Mobile works too, but desktop offers a more detailed view.

For each entry, click the gray pencil icon for individual controls, or select the checkbox and hit "Remove" to revoke access entirely.

Ads
Beneath "Apps and Websites," explore the "Ads" section to uncover what Facebook shares with advertisers about your interests. This directly influences your ad feed. Spot inaccuracies? Click "Remove" to halt that data sharing and refine your experience.

Quizzes and Surveys
These viral attractions pose significant risks. Scammers exploit them to harvest data. Participants often grant broad access—name, photos, friends list, likes, IP, and more—without realizing it. Links may lead to malware or phishing.

Avoid them when possible. If tempted, verify the creator's legitimacy. Skip any requiring logins or emails beyond Facebook. Maintain minimal profile info and monitor settings vigilantly.

For robust protection, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) under "Security and Login" in Settings. It pairs your password with a phone-generated code, thwarting unauthorized access even if credentials are compromised.
