How to Qualify for Up to $50/Month Government Broadband Discount: Emergency Benefit Guide

In the wake of widespread layoffs and financial struggles last year, Congress passed a stimulus package in December that includes vital support for broadband access. This provision helps eligible households cover internet costs amid economic hardship. Applications are now open—starting this week, you can apply if you qualify.

The FCC administers the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, offering a monthly discount of up to $50 on broadband bills (or $75 for households on eligible tribal lands). Qualifying applicants can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 toward a laptop, desktop, or tablet.

Every dollar counts toward staying connected. Note: Applications became available on May 12.

Eligibility is straightforward and includes household income at or below 135% of federal poverty guidelines, enrollment in programs like SNAP or Medicaid, pandemic-related job loss or reduced hours, or other specified criteria. Get full details on the FCC website or GetEmergencyBroadband.org.

To apply, use the online portal at GetEmergencyBroadband.org, contact your broadband provider to confirm participation (check participating providers here), or download and mail a paper application.

Important: Apply soon—this temporary program ends when funds are exhausted or six months after the Department of Health and Human Services declares the COVID-19 emergency over, whichever occurs first.

Update May 12, 2021, 9:50 a.m. ET: Applications are now available.
